INTRODUCTIONWiththerapidchangesonindustriesandinformationtechnologiesinrecentyears,sometraditionalbulkelectronicapplianceshavetobemonitoredforalongtime.AlloftheircontroldevicessuchascommunicationinterfacesgraduallyentertheInternetinformationera.Controlofallequipmentshasbeenperformedthroughtheuseofcomputers.MostequipmentusesPLC(Programmablelogiccontroller)toconnectwithcomputertomonitorconsumingdevices.PLC,sarewidelyusedinindustrialfieldsbecausetheyareinexpensive,easytoinstallandveryflexibleinapplications.APLCinteractswiththeexternalworldthroughitsinputsandoutputs.Sincetechnologyformotioncontrolofcircuitdrivesbecameavailable,theuseofPLCwithpowerelectronicsinelectricmachineapplicationshasbeenintroducedinthemanufacturingautomation1.Dipcoatersarerobustcomputercontrolledinstrumentsforprecisethinfilmdeposition.Weprovidesolutionsforthedipcoatingofsmalltolargesamplesineithersingleormultiplevesselswhichissuitableforbothsimpleandcomplexvesselsequencing2.Sincetechnologyformotioncontrolofelectricdrivesbecameavailable,theuseofPLC,swithpowerelectronicsinelectricmachinesapplicationshasbeenintroducedinthemanufacturingautomation13&4.ManyapplicationsofDCmotorsrequirebesidesthemotorcontrolfunctionality,thehandlingofseveralspecificanaloganddigitalinput/outputsignals,homesignals,forwardcommand,reversecommandsandon/off5.Insuchcases,acontrolunitinvolvingaPLCmustbeaddedtothesystemstructure.ThispaperpresentsaPLC-basedmonitoringandcontrolsystemforDipCoating.Itdescribesthedesignandimplementationoftheconfiguredhardwareandsoftware.ThetestresultsobtainedonDCmotorperformanceshowimprovedefficiencyandincreasedaccuracyintimeconstantcontrolledoperation.Thus,thePLCcorrelatesandcontrolstheoperationalparameterstothetimesetpointrequestedbytheuserandmonitorstheDCmotorsystemduringmanualoperationandunderautomaticconditions.2. PLCASASYSTEMCONTROLLERPLCisamicroprocessor-basedcontrolsystem,designedforautomationprocessesinindustrialenvironments.ItusesaprogrammablememoryfortheinternalstorageofUserorientatedinstructionsforimplementingspecificfunctionssuchasarithmetic,counting,logic,sequencing,andtiming6&7.APLCcanbeprogrammedtosense,activateandcontrolindustrialequipment,incorporatesanumberofI/Opoints,whichallowelectricalsignalstobeinterfaced.InputdevicesandoutputdevicesoftheprocessareconnectedtothePLCandthecontrolprogramisenteredintothePLCmemory(Fig1).Inourapplication,itcontrolsthroughanalog/digitalinputsandoutputsthevaryingload-constantspeedoperationofaninductionmotor.Also,thePLCcontinuouslymonitorstheinputsandactivatestheoutputsaccordingtothecontrolprogram.ThisPLCsystemisofmodulartypecomposedofspecifichardwarebuildingblocks(modules),whichplugdirectlyintoaproprietarybus:acentralprocessorunit(CPU),apowersupplyunit,input-outputmodulesI/Oandaprogramterminal.Suchamodularapproachhastheadvantagethattheinitialconfigurationcanbeexpandedforotherfutureapplicationssuchasmultimachinesystemsorcomputerlinking8.3.
