Finalreflection:unlockingthepotentialofmobile32ForewordsDirectorGeneral,GSMAThisyearmarkstheeighthyearsincethemobileindustrydemonstrateditscommitmenttosustainabledevelopment,becomingthefirstindustrytocommittothe17UNSustainableDevelopmentGoals(SDGs).Aswereachthehalfwaypointforachievingthesegoals,nowistheperfecttimeforthemobileindustrytoreflectonourachievements,examinethecurrentchallengesandsetoursightsontheopportunitiesthatlieahead.In2015zwhentheworldadoptedthe2030AgendaforSustainableDevelopment,themobileindustry'saverageSDGimpactscorestoodat33,achieving33%ofwhatitcouldpotentiallycontributetotheSDGs.Fastforwardto2022zandourindustrysaverageimpactscoreacrossthe17SDGsroseto53zdemonstratingsignificantprogress.Notably,wehavewitnessedsubstantialimprovementsincontributionstoSDG4:QualityEducation,SDG6:CleanWaterandSanitation,andSDG7:AffordableandCleanEnergy.Theseadvancementscanbeattributedtotheincreasingnumberofpeoplewhorelyonmobiletechnologytoaccesseducationalresources,usegovernmentservicesandmanagetheirbills.Themobileindustry,sbiggestimpactcontinuestobeinSDG9:Industry,InnovationandInfrastructure,drivenbythewidespreadreachofmobilenetworks,investmentsin5Gandinfrastructureandthegrowinguptakeofmobileinternetservices.Overthepastsevenyears,closeto2billionmorepeoplehavegainedaccesstotheinternetthroughtheirmobilephones.Thissignificantconnectivityachievementhasbroughtsclosertobridgingthedigitaldivideandempoweringindividualswiththeresourcestheyneedtothrive.Wehavealsomadesignificantprogressinexpandingmobilebroadbandcoverage.Bytheendof2022,95%oftheglobalpopulationhadaccesstomobilebroadbandcoverage,leavingonly400millionpeoplewithoutconnectivity.Consideringthatthisnumberstoodat1.8billionin2015,theremarkableprogressiscleartosee.ItbecomesevenmoreremarkablewiththerealisationthatcountrieswithahighermobileconnectivityscoredobetteroverallintheimplementationoftheirSDGs.Whilemuchhasbeenachieved,thegloballandscapehasalsoundergoneprofoundtransformationsinrecentyears,presentingnewchallengesthathinderourprogresstowardstheSDGs.TheCovid-19pandemic,conflicts,climate-relateddisasters,theongoingeconomiccrisisandhighinflationhavesignificantlyimpactedourefforts.Vulnerablepopulationshavebornethebruntofrisingenergyandfoodprices,exacerbatingthecost-of-livingcrisis.Inthiscontext,theworkwedoasanindustrytoadvancetheSDGsbecomesevenmorecrucialinbuildingresilienceandcreatingasustainablefuture.Whileweremainoptimisticaboutthepotentialimpactwecanachieve,wecannottakeprogressforgranted.TheflataverageSDGimpactscoreobservedin2022meansthatwemustkeepworkingtogetheracrossthepublicandprivatesectorstoaccelerateoureffortsandincreasethescaleofourimpact.Aswenavigatetowardsthe2030SDGtargets,thisreportconsidershowwecanaccelerateourefforts.Byfocusingonunlockinggrowthinmobileandmobileinternetadoption,acceleratingtheusageofmobile-enabledservicesandembracingsustainablebusinesspractices,WecanmaximiseourcontributionstotheSDGs.Together,asanindustry,wehavetheopportunitytodrivepositivechange,empowercommunitiesandcreateasustainablefuturebyunlockingthepowerofconnectivityandcreatingabetterfutureforall.JoseMariaAlvarez-PaUeteChair
